The Powder Springs Driveway That Cracked Because of What Was Under It

The eight-year-old driveway had cracks wide enough to swallow a coin. The concrete was never the problem — it had been poured on undisturbed clay with no compacted base and nowhere for water to go.

Scope
Demolition and replacement of 720 sq. ft. driveway, base correction, drainage

01The problem the homeowner described

The homeowners had already paid to have the cracks filled twice. Both repairs re-opened within a season.

They assumed the concrete mix had been bad and wanted a stronger pour this time.

02What we diagnosed on site

We cored a section. There was no aggregate base — the slab sat directly on Paulding County red clay, which swells wet and shrinks dry.

Control joints had been cut too shallow and too far apart, so the slab chose its own crack lines.

Roof runoff from a valley above discharged onto the driveway edge, saturating the clay at exactly the point where the worst cracking appeared.

03What we recommended — and why
  • Replace, don't patch. A third crack fill would have failed the same way for the same reason.
  • Excavate deeper than the old slab, install and compact a graded aggregate base in lifts, and add a drain to carry roof runoff past the driveway.
  • Correct joint layout and depth, fiber-reinforced mix, and a curing plan — the cheap parts of the job that decide whether a slab lasts 25 years.
04How it was built
  1. Days 1–2 — Demolition and excavation

Old slab broken out and hauled, subgrade excavated to allow a full base section.

  2. Days 3–4 — Base and drainage

Graded aggregate placed and compacted in lifts with density checked, drain line installed to daylight away from the slab.

  3. Day 5 — Forms and steel

Forms set to pitch water away from the garage, wire reinforcement chaired off the base.

  4. Day 6 — Pour and finish

Fiber-reinforced pour, broom finish, control joints cut to depth at correct spacing the same day.

  5. Days 7–9 — Cure and cleanup

Curing compound applied, site restored, vehicle traffic held off until the slab reached strength.

05The result, in numbers
  • 720 square feet replaced for $16,800, including base correction and drainage the original contractor skipped.
  • The slab now drains away from the garage instead of toward it, and roof runoff bypasses the driveway entirely.
  • Inspected at the one-year mark with no cracking beyond the intended control joints.
What this teaches

Concrete almost never fails because of the concrete. Ask any driveway bidder what base they're installing, how deep, and where the water goes — the answers predict the outcome.

Why the old slab cracked

Four inches of concrete poured on unprepared clay. The replacement sits on a compacted, graded aggregate base with proper joint spacing.

The trip hazard at the front walk was the same base problem. Handling it with the driveway saved a second mobilization.
